New for 2017-2018: Due to a decrease in Ogden families in our neighborhood, there will be only one school bus contracted this year for our private bus service. That bus will be shared between the two campuses and also perform the after school route at 5pm. The OPB for this year is now filled and is not accepting new applicants. THE HISTORY OF THE OGDEN PAY BUS & OUR MISSION STATEMENT
OGDEN PAY BUS IS A PRIVATE BUS SERVICE RUN BY NEW EASTSIDE OGDEN PARENT VOLUNTEERS.
WE ARE NOT PAID FOR THIS SERVICE. We do not profit from this endeavor, other than achieving the reassurances that our children are being transported to and from the Ogden International Campuses safely, affordably and on time, while helping as many other families as possible, too.
The New Eastside neighborhood is located within the Ogden School District, but our neighborhood does not fall within the CPS “Free Bus Zone,” and because the school and CPS administration were unable to arrange for a CPS bus many years ago (free or paid, it was outside their jurisdiction), a few Ogden parents realized that they’d have to arrange transportation to and from school on our own. Over a decade ago, the incredibly thoughtful and pragmatic Lynn Brahin (a former Ogden parent who we ALL have to thank for her forward-thinking approach to this difficult situation) and a small group of parents took the initiative to resolve this situation, researching the option of contacting a bus for that first year, to transport a hand-full of neighborhood students to and from school at a shared cost. One year turned into many, and this history reveals why there was such a desperate need to create the OPB (Ogden Pay Bus) in the first place.
Over time, and as our neighborhood grew into the thriving, beautiful place it is to live in today, so too did our Ogden student population boom. More parents started inquiring about our OPB bus, and if their children could ride it too. The OPB volunteers were happy because our cost per year went down, and neighborhood parents were happy because their children were getting to and from school safely and in such an efficient way. Through the years, our private bus service has evolved into a transportation option for many Ogden students within our neighborhood. We do not make money providing this service. We dedicate our time, services and willingness as volunteers with the purpose of continuing to help as many Ogden families in the New Eastside while providing the safest transportation possible for our own children.
While we still work closely with CPS administration and school officials regarding certain student/bus matters, Ogden Administrators and CPS are not associated with the Ogden Pay Bus. As has always been the case, it remains a private service run by volunteers who dedicate countless hours negotiating contacts, collecting applications, payments, documentation, updating this blog, arranging for bus passes and composing or completing correspondences between many families throughout the year. This is no easy feat, all in the name of comfortable, safe and economically feasible transportation for our children to be transported to and from the various Ogden School Campuses.
When OPB began this service many years ago, the intent was simple and straight forward – to contract with a reputable, reliable transportation company that will transport our children to and from public school in a safe, timely, and consistent manner. Over time, our ridership grew, yet it was never intended to be anything else. The OPB Service provides transportation ONLY. Students riding the bus must be responsible enough to board and exit the bus independently and WITHOUT SUPERVISION.
We have created this blog to keep the parent community abreast of any service announcements, meetings, registration deadlines and any other community news that will affect our OPB service. We are working on a purely voluntary basis as we try our best to make neighborhood student access to the Ogden Pay Bus as accessible as possible – but there may be limits that arise, with each new year posing unexpected circumstances.
OPB ridership is determined on a first-come, first-served basis and registration is announced around the final quarter of every school year. There may be yearly fluctuations in number of buses, price per student, or registration protocol due to the wax and wane of neighborhood ridership, as well as many other undetermined factors that play a part in price and demand. As a private service trying to accommodate as many students as is safe and logistically as well as financially feasible, we will do our best to supply a spot for as many Ogden students in our neighborhood as possible on the bus, but that might not always be possible.
If you are interested in your child riding the OPB in the future, we highly advise you submit your deposit and all required paperwork as soon as the first part of registration is announced in late spring.
We are working with CPS Vendor approved Bus companies and Ogden administrators to provide the most efficient, reliable, and safe transportation service for all of our children. To reiterate, Ogden Administrators and CPS are not associated with the Ogden Pay Bus, and future changes in campus student redistribution, routine, bell times or shifts in neighborhood ridership may bring about new issues and areas of concern in the future. We will address each situation with careful consideration. Each yellow school bus will have the company name on the side. There will also be a sign in the window by the front door saying, “Ogden New Eastside Pay Bus“.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR A SPOT ON THE SCHOOL BUS
Two of the most popular questions the OPB volunteers receive are “Does my child qualify to ride the OPB Bus and when is registration?”
The spots on the bus are filled on a first come, first serve basis, and the price varies from year to year, depending on various factors. Registration occurs on a specified date near the end of the calendar school year (usually in May or June), just before Summer break begins, to secure a spot for your child for the following school year. Spaces are limited for both the East (grades K-5) and West campus (grades 6-12) routes so if you are interested in registering your child for this convenient neighborhood transportation option, watch this blog for announcements regarding registration dates and location.
